Ramblins

As I sit here listening to the guys who do our music at church I am struck by how God uses people. To have enough talent to pick up at guitar or drumstick and play praises to God.

The only thing I play is the radio! I know God says to make a joyful noise but it sounds so much better when people who have talent do it!! Halleluia, Your love makes me sing!

As christians, should we only listen to praise, worship and hymns? Can we listen to country, rock, rap? If we have christian brothers and sisters who do listen to other forms of music, are we to confront them about it?

Is classical out? What about musicals? Phantom of the Opera, The Lion King, Wicked, concerts???
These are just a few of the questions that have been brought to my attention in the past few hours.

I truly wish I could somehow capture the music being played in here and post it. "You are holy, holy, holy and I want to be holy like You are"!!

I know that we are to do only those things that honor God. Whether it is music, movies, tv.

I have to admit...I love tv! I have 2 shows actually 3 that I watch. Dancing with the Stars, Survivor, and General Hospital. I have to admit, I like watching these shows! I'm also a news junkie...I'm into fox news! HGTV!

Okay, maybe I have a problem but it's not like I can't miss them. Okay, okay, I make sure I record them if I'm leaving the house that night.

Last month my husband did away with our cable!!! I had a fit!!!! I went out and bought "rabbit ears" for 4 tv's.
So now ALL we get is about 5 channels, not all channels come in in all of the rooms. We do get about 3 spanish channels really good!! and PBS.

Now my tv's have those little metal rods coming out of them. I am dying to put foil on the ends, it's so retro!

Anyway, life goes on!

Ice Cream always brings things into perspective!! Hello DQ!!!

Have a fabulous weekend!

Dreama,

I believe we can listen to music that isn't christian so long as it doesn't promote things that are contrary to godly standards. I can think of one of the Judd's songs . . . I can't remember the title, but it spoke of flys on the butter. Some of these simply take me back to a more simple time. Even so, like you, I think the best music is christian music.

You say you've been homeschooling your children now for about a year, I think. How is that going, and out of curiosity, what prompted you to homeschool?

Enjoy your day.

Dale,
Thanks for stopping by! I am still pondering the whole music, tv thing. I know we are to be “separate” from the world, but just how far? Should I give up my love of musicals? And to find music that isn’t contrary to God’s standards is very hard these days, not to mention tv shows.

As for homeschooling my daughter, we will begin our 2nd year in August. We kind of go by the public school calendar. What prompted me to homeschool?? WOW! I had NO intention to homeschool. I knew people who did and thought they were “out of their minds”!! LOL!! God totally convicted me to do it!!
My child really needed more one on one help. She had ear problems and missed out on the sounds and such that you learn K-2. Not that the school didn’t try to help, they did and they were very thoughtful and helpful in every way. My daughter would also compare herself to other kids…I didn’t care about the other kids, I cared about her.

With God’s help and A LOT of patience, she reads very well!!!

The other thing that prompted me to take her out was the “system”; I worked for one of the schools here in town and loved my job.

God started showing me things in the school system that weren’t right. I saw good people being treated badly. I saw “Christians” who were in church on Wed. and Sunday but the “love one another” attitude stayed in their assigned pews at church.

It hurt my heart to see how people were being treated especially since I had grown up and graduated from here. Four generations of my family have gone to school here and now it wasn’t anything like the old days. I guess, God was showing me things through His eyes and I didn’t see any form of Him at any of the schools.

So there’s my story. It can be frustrating, but rewarding! This year will be another year that we will fully rely on God!!!
Have a great day!

Hi Dreama,

I loved this post! It made me laugh (thanks)! I remember my daughters being the only kids in high school (or so they thought) that knew what "rabbit ears" were :)

I thought I would share an old post - hope you don't mind the link. http://julieblack.wordpress.com/2007/04/22/not-watching-american-idol/

It was an experiment we did at our house to remove the tv watching for a week. Be sure to read the comments where I posted each day's progress.

We did the experiment, and then went right back to watching television. However, a funny thing happened....somehow our desire for so much tv changed. I can honestly say that I have only watched maybe two shows in the past week.

I just don't have the desire for tv that I used to. It wasn't a planned decision, it just happened.

So....here's to rabbit ears! You know, they are great to decorate. At Christmas, you can put little stockings on the top of them. Foil wrapped around at the top also looks great and improves the tv reception! ;)

Happy Monday,

Julie

i remember the summer i "babysat" y'all. i got so addicted to soaps that i had to bring a book to read and hide in another room to break the habit. since i am so much holier than you i guess i got it out of my system, but you didn't! :) it is funny that when i go get my nails done GH is usually on and it cracks me up that all the young, sexy people from twenty some odd years ago are now the old people!

Music does not have to be "Christian" to be honoring to God. Some of the worst music on the radio is "Christian". Much of it is watered down mush, badly sung, badly played, badly written. Read "Roaring Lambs" by Robert Briner. It is a little out of date, but the message is timeless.

There are groups that are played on secular stations that band members are strong Christians, but they aren't considered a Christian band. There are bands that travel on secular tours, but they are strong Christians that see the other bands as their mission fields. I have friends in the business. (I'll be hanging out with some of the all day Saturday)

Does the music put bad thoughts in your head? Does it take your imagination where it doesn't need to go? Are the words uplifting? Do they make you think outside the box or at a higher level?

Julie: That is so funny! We don't watch as much now, although it is irritating when I start flipping, LOL!!! I think that was actually the habit.

Nancy: Hey Woman! I totally agree with you about the music. 94.9 has started playing music that I remember listening to in the 80's and it had nothing to do with God. Holier???? You are such a funny woman!! Love ya!
